Bible Verses for Loneliness

Loneliness isn't always about having no one around. Sometimes it's sitting in a room full of people and feeling that nobody quite follows what you're saying. Sometimes it's closing your front door onto a very quiet flat, knowing the evening is yours alone again.

Here are eight passages from the Bible about being alone and feeling isolated. They don't tell you to get out more or make new friends, and they don't treat loneliness as something you brought on yourself. They make one point: even if right now it's only you, you have not been forgotten.

A father of the fatherless, and a defender of the widows, is God in his holy habitation. God sets the lonely in families. He brings out the prisoners with singing, but the rebellious dwell in a sun-scorched land.

Psalm 68:5-6

When my father and my mother forsake me, then the LORD will take me up.

Psalm 27:10

Turn to me, and have mercy on me, for I am desolate and afflicted.

Psalm 25:16

The LORD himself is who goes before you. He will be with you. He will not fail you nor forsake you. Don’t be afraid. Don’t be discouraged.”

Deuteronomy 31:8

“Can a woman forget her nursing child, that she should not have compassion on the son of her womb? Yes, these may forget, yet I will not forget you! Behold, I have engraved you on the palms of my hands. Your walls are continually before me.

Isaiah 49:15-16

I will not leave you orphans. I will come to you.

John 14:18

teaching them to observe all things that I commanded you. Behold, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” Amen.

Matthew 28:20

If I take the wings of the dawn, and settle in the uttermost parts of the sea, even there your hand will lead me, and your right hand will hold me.

Psalm 139:9-10
