Bible Verses for Comfort When You're Hurting
When you're hurting, advice is the last thing you need. "Look on the bright side," "it could be worse" — those only make the room lonelier. Often what people want is much simpler: someone nearby, who doesn't have to say anything at all.
Here are eight passages from the Bible about comfort and consolation. They're in no hurry to fix you, and they don't try to explain why this happened or what it's supposed to teach you. When you're hurting, we hope these words feel less like advice and more like a hand resting on your shoulder.
As one whom his mother comforts, so I will comfort you. You will be comforted in Jerusalem.”
Isaiah 66:13
In the multitude of my thoughts within me, your comforts delight my soul.
Psalm 94:19
This is my comfort in my affliction, for your word has revived me.
Psalm 119:50
Now our Lord Jesus Christ himself, and God our Father, who loved us and gave us eternal comfort and good hope through grace, comfort your hearts and establish you in every good work and word.
2 Thessalonians 2:16-17
I will pray to the Father, and he will give you another Counselor, that he may be with you forever:
John 14:16
Sing, heavens, and be joyful, earth! Break out into singing, mountains! For the LORD has comforted his people, and will have compassion on his afflicted.
Isaiah 49:13
You, who have shown us many and bitter troubles, you will let me live. You will bring us up again from the depths of the earth.
Psalm 71:20
“I, even I, am he who comforts you. Who are you, that you are afraid of man who shall die, and of the son of man who will be made as grass?
Isaiah 51:12
