Bible Verses for Grief and Sorrow
After you lose someone, time goes strange. Some days pass without incident. Then a song, a smell, a sentence left half-finished, and you're crying in the supermarket. Grief keeps no schedule and has no deadline, and nobody can tell you how long it is supposed to take.
Here are eight passages from the Bible about sorrow, weeping, and being comforted. They don't rush you toward closure. They don't ask you to be strong, and they don't try to explain the loss away. Mostly they say: your sadness has been seen. When your heart is broken, we hope these words sit with you a while.
The LORD is near to those who have a broken heart, and saves those who have a crushed spirit.
Psalm 34:18
Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted.
Matthew 5:4
He heals the broken in heart, and binds up their wounds.
Psalm 147:3
Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our affliction, that we may be able to comfort those who are in any affliction, through the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God.

Isaiah 61:1-3
Most certainly I tell you that you will weep and lament, but the world will rejoice. You will be sorrowful, but your sorrow will be turned into joy. A woman, when she gives birth, has sorrow because her time has come. But when she has delivered the child, she doesn’t remember the anguish any more, for the joy that a human being is born into the world. Therefore you now have sorrow, but I will see you again, and your heart will rejoice, and no one will take your joy away from you.
