Bible Verses About Hope When You Feel Hopeless

When you can't see a way forward, the days get heavy. It isn't pain exactly — it's blankness, not knowing what there is left to look forward to. Some days you can't even talk yourself into "give it time."

Here are eight passages from the Bible about hope. They don't promise tomorrow will be better, and they won't ask you to think positive. They offer something smaller: that things may be moving in places you can't see yet. In the middle of despair, we hope they leave a gap for light.

Now may the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, that you may abound in hope in the power of the Holy Spirit.

Romans 15:13

This I recall to my mind; therefore I have hope. It is because of the LORD’s loving kindnesses that we are not consumed, because his mercies don’t fail. They are new every morning. Great is your faithfulness. “The LORD is my portion,” says my soul. “Therefore I will hope in him.”

Lamentations 3:21-24

For we were saved in hope, but hope that is seen is not hope. For who hopes for that which he sees? But if we hope for that which we don’t see, we wait for it with patience.

Romans 8:24-25

This hope we have as an anchor of the soul, a hope both sure and steadfast and entering into that which is within the veil,

Hebrews 6:19

Now, Lord, what do I wait for? My hope is in you.

Psalm 39:7

For you are my hope, Lord GOD, my confidence from my youth.

Psalm 71:5

Happy is he who has the God of Jacob for his help, whose hope is in the LORD, his God,

Psalm 146:5

Not only this, but we also rejoice in our sufferings, knowing that suffering produces perseverance; and perseverance, proven character; and proven character, hope; and hope doesn’t disappoint us, because God’s love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit who was given to us.

Romans 5:3-5
