Bible Verses for When You Feel Discouraged

You worked at it a long time and it didn't come together. Or it did, and then it fell apart again. Discouragement rarely arrives all at once — it accumulates, until even deciding whether to keep going feels like too much effort.

Here are eight passages from the Bible about being downcast and starting again. They don't tell you to cheer up, and they aren't about success. They make a smaller point: wanting to give up is a normal thing to feel, and feeling it doesn't mean you're finished.

Why are you in despair, my soul? Why are you disturbed within me? Hope in God! For I shall still praise him, the saving help of my countenance, and my God.

Psalm 42:11

Let’s not be weary in doing good, for we will reap in due season if we don’t give up.

Galatians 6:9

but those who wait for the LORD will renew their strength. They will mount up with wings like eagles. They will run, and not be weary. They will walk, and not faint.

Isaiah 40:31

Haven’t I commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Don’t be afraid. Don’t be dismayed, for the LORD your God is with you wherever you go.”

Joshua 1:9

The righteous cry, and the LORD hears, and delivers them out of all their troubles. The LORD is near to those who have a broken heart, and saves those who have a crushed spirit.

Psalm 34:17-18

We are pressed on every side, yet not crushed; perplexed, yet not to despair; pursued, yet not forsaken; struck down, yet not destroyed;

2 Corinthians 4:8-9

Therefore we don’t faint, but though our outward person is decaying, yet our inward person is renewed day by day. For our light affliction, which is for the moment, works for us more and more exceedingly an eternal weight of glory, while we don’t look at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen. For the things which are seen are temporal, but the things which are not seen are eternal.

2 Corinthians 4:16-18

My flesh and my heart fails, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever.

Psalm 73:26

This is only part of it
