Bible Verses for Grief and the Loss of a Loved One

After losing someone who mattered, time splits into before and after. Everyone else’s life moves on, but you’re stuck somewhere, and one small thing — a smell, a song — can bring it all rushing back. Missing them keeps no schedule and doesn’t follow anyone’s tidy stages.

Here are nine passages from the Bible about grief and loss. They don’t hurry you to move on, and they don’t say time will simply heal it. They keep company with the missing, one verse at a time.

What the Bible Says About Grief and Loss

But we don’t want you to be ignorant, brothers, concerning those who have fallen asleep, so that you don’t grieve like the rest, who have no hope. For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so God will bring with him those who have fallen asleep in Jesus.

1 Thessalonians 4:13-14

He will wipe away every tear from their eyes. Death will be no more; neither will there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain any more. The first things have passed away.”

Revelation 21:4

He has swallowed up death forever! The Lord GOD will wipe away tears from off all faces. He will take the reproach of his people away from off all the earth, for the LORD has spoken it.

Isaiah 25:8

Precious in the LORD’s sight is the death of his saints.

Psalm 116:15

For if we live, we live to the Lord. Or if we die, we die to the Lord. If therefore we live or die, we are the Lord’s.

Romans 14:8

For we know that if the earthly house of our tent is dissolved, we have a building from God, a house not made with hands, eternal, in the heavens.

2 Corinthians 5:1

So teach us to count our days, that we may gain a heart of wisdom.

Psalm 90:12

Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in me will still live, even if he dies. Whoever lives and believes in me will never die. Do you believe this?”

John 11:25-26

In my Father’s house are many homes. If it weren’t so, I would have told you. I am going to prepare a place for you. If I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and will receive you to myself; that where I am, you may be there also.

John 14:2-3
