Bible Verses About Contentment

Contentment is hard, and often not because you have too little — it’s that the eye keeps drifting to what other people have. A few scrolls and the comparing starts; even when there’s enough, some corner still feels empty and you can’t name what’s missing.

Here are eight passages from the Bible about contentment. They don’t tell you to stop wanting more, and they don’t call wanting greed. They lay contentment out, one verse at a time, and let you read slowly.

What the Bible Says About Contentment

Not that I speak because of lack, for I have learned in whatever state I am, to be content in it. I know how to be humbled, and I also know how to abound. In any and all circumstances I have learned the secret both to be filled and to be hungry, both to abound and to be in need. I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.

Philippians 4:11-13

But godliness with contentment is great gain. For we brought nothing into the world, and we certainly can’t carry anything out. But having food and clothing, we will be content with that.

1 Timothy 6:6-8

Be free from the love of money, content with such things as you have, for he has said, “I will in no way leave you, neither will I in any way forsake you.”

Hebrews 13:5

Better is a little that the righteous has, than the abundance of many wicked.

Psalm 37:16

Remove far from me falsehood and lies. Give me neither poverty nor riches. Feed me with the food that is needful for me, lest I be full, deny you, and say, ‘Who is the LORD?’ or lest I be poor, and steal, and so dishonor the name of my God.

Proverbs 30:8-9

The LORD is my shepherd; I shall lack nothing.

Psalm 23:1

But seek first God’s Kingdom and his righteousness; and all these things will be given to you as well.

Matthew 6:33

Better is little, with the fear of the LORD, than great treasure with trouble.

Proverbs 15:16
